SEVIS and SEVP

The Student and Exchange Visitor Program are shortly termed as SEVP. SEVP is specially made to help the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and Department of State (DOS) to monitor and control school and exchange program and visitors who stay in United States under F, M and J category of visas. The information of Exchange Visitor and Student is maintained by Student and the Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS).

SEVIS is a computerized internet system holding the current and accurate information of the non-migrant students in United States with F and M Visas, exchange visitor visa i.e. J Visas. The system also maintains information of F-2, M-2 and J2 which are dependent visa of all three F, M and J Visa.

The main role of SEVIS is to enable school and program sponsors to broadcast important information and event notifications to DOS and DHS during a student or exchange visitor’s stay in the United States via internet. Any student who intends to study in USA and apply for student visa must have Form I-20 form generated by SEVIS that is issued by the USA university or School that are approved by DHS. It is the responsibility of your school to enter your information from the Form I-20 student visa into SEVIS. It is through the SEVIS, the consular officer will verify your I-20 Visa information for further processes. If someone has applied for F-1 or M-1 Visa for an individual educational program, he has to pay fees for SEVIS I-901 to DHS.
