The university, college or program in which the students have applied will send all the relevant information that will be useful as a part of student visa requirements. The student can apply for visa only after he has been selected as a student by a particular university, school or college in USA. If the student had applied in more than one program, school or college and if he is selected in all of them, then the student has to decide in which institution he wants to take admission.

The first important document that is sent by the institute will be Form I-20. Form I-20 is not a visa; it is the basic document that is referred for getting F-1 student visa to study in the USA. It is proof which suggests that the student has got the admission in the particular institution. Form I-20, Student Visa (if granted), passport and other required documents will be required to get entry in USA. According to US Embassy or Consulate, the student visa is of three types. The three types are F, M and J. All the three types have there own requirements, rules, regulations and conditions.

F-1 category visa is given to those students who want to do full-time academic studies or to do different language courses.

M-1 category visa is allotted to those students who want to do vocational studies or non-academic studies. In order to learn certain specific criteria, that is not provided in his home country.

J-1 category visa is issued to those students particularly of US bound, who wants to learn the practical knowledge.

Students have to wait for minimum 4-5 weeks for getting visa from the Consulate or Embassy once the visa application is approved. According to the Education advice, the student has to apply for their visa in the month of May, June and July to resume at the academic institution in the fall semester that generally starts from August. If the student wants to apply in the months of November or December, then apply it one month in advance as it takes one month time to complete the whole process.

The US Citizenship and Immigration Services will verify the forms, letters, fees, fingerprints and teachers and student resources sections before giving them visa.
