Doctoral Admission Process

The overall doctoral admission process includes identifying your professor, interacting with them and finalizing the research program along with arranging required financial assistant. As this process takes lot of time, it is advisable to start initiating it before 12-18 months before the actual reporting date to the university.

You need to meet eligibility criteria of the university and a match between your research interest and your area of specialization of the department your will be studying your doctorate. Your application should be completed with two sets of requirements: one set for the graduate school and another for the graduate department.

Choosing your subject:

Choosing subject of your interest for your doctorate is the first step to take decision. Here you need to focus on more specific area of study. For example, if you say studying doctorate in Electrical Engineering is not enough, you need to be more specific as studying doctorate Power transmission and its losses, a specific subject within the field of Electrical Engineering. It is very crucial to decide as it should describe the reasons of having your high interest in the specific field. It is advisable to get some knowledge about your research subject which will be helpful further in your admission process.

Standardized test Preparation:

GRE is required test to be qualified for most of the doctoral engineering programs. Getting admission in doctoral program is really tough as the total number of admissions to be taken by the engineering colleges is as low as 5 students per calendar year. Hence most of the universities requires excellent score in general GRE and subject GRE test. You will be also required to qualify TOEFL and TSE test. You need to check out with the engineering colleges for the cut out scores for each of these tests.

Choosing your university:

Along with your preparation of GRE, TOEFL and TSE test, you need to identify universities that are good in the area you need to specialize in. You need to check the research interests of the department in which our research will fall in.

Choosing department and Professors:

Once you identify list of universities and their departments who have interest in your research area, you need to identify professors who are interested to work on your research subject of doctoral. You can get professors contact information from the university website.

You should start contacting professors describing your interest to work with him, the research subject and your capabilities to work on your research subject successfully.

You need to start this process much earlier with almost all possible university. You will find out professors who will be interested in your research area, identify those and complete the application process of all those universities.

Follow the deadlines of university and submit your application complying all the requirements.

Project yourself:

Statement of Purpose is the most crucial part of your doctoral application. You statement should clearly define your interest in the subject of your research. If you have made any research in that field will be helpful to strengthen your statement.
