As a part of preparing yourself to come to USA, this will help you to know the values that shape the attitudes and behavior of people in USA. Before considering the core values of United States, it is important for you to remember and accept that the people behavior and attitudes are highly dependent on their values. The society of USA is made up of diversity of ethical cultures and groups and perhaps that is the main factor to shape the present USA. Some groups and individuals have a set of values that are somewhat different from the mainstream people of America.

Core American Values:

Privacy:
The people of America like to spend their time alone and loved their privacy. International visitors find offices and houses open by the Americans, but they may not judge what is all about in their minds. Asking a question like, “What is in your mind?” is considered to be very intrusive.

Individuality:
People of America are buoyant to be independent and self-develop their goals of life right from early age. They are persuading for not to become much dependent on friends, relatives, teachers and even parents. They are also awarded when they try hard to achieve their goals.

Equality:
American believes that everyone is created equal and everyone should have similar rights. They consider all man and woman equal in terms of cultural and ethical groups that are residing in USA. There are laws formed to protect the right of equality in several forms. The best example of equality is the high profile individuals from various domains are also called by their first name only. One will not find esteemed titles like “Sir” or “Madam”

Time:
People of United States make proper use of their time. They do not waste their time at all considering that time is money. To be on time in appointment, meetings, class, dinner etc are very essential in USA. People there even apologize if they reached late. Instructors sometimes give demerits to the student on reaching late to the class. And students at most of the university have granted permission by the institution to leave the class room if the instructor is late for 10-15 minutes.

Informality:
On other hand, the lifestyle of America is very casual. You will notice that students are coming to class not in uniform but in shorts and t-shirt. Male instructors occasionally wears tie along with formal wear instead they wear blue jeans while taking lectures. While female instructors generally wear, slacks with comfortable pair of shoes. Welcome greetings and farewell in the classroom are usually short, friendly and informal. Generally, they use ‘hi’, ‘how are you?’, ‘what’s up?’ etc. to greet while ‘see you’, ‘take it easy’, ‘come by sometime’ etc. are the farewell for Americans to communicate with their classmates and friends. Americans are also known for very casual friendship that begins and ends easily.

Hard working and Achievement:
Americans are always impressed by the adventures nature, hard working and achievement oriented people throughout the world. Their competitive spirit is a motivational factor for hard working. Americans frequently compete either with themselves or with others. They are happier when they beat their own records in any type of competition. They always in the ‘on go’ mood simply for the reason sitting ideally means just wasting the time for them.

Direct and Assertive:
American prefers to solve their difference face to face, without a mediator. The people are always encouraged and given chance to express their opinions. Students are always encouraged to take challenges or disagree with the some points of the lectures. This kind of nature usually is considered as rude by many foreign visitors.

Looking to the Future and to Change:
Children are usually asked their aim when they grow up. College students are also asked their aim after they became a graduate, while the professor plan out well in advance the work that they will do after their retirement. Changes are always compared with the progress, while holding the traditions today, considered as outdated ways among Americans. Today, Americans are become more recyclable. They purchases products that are having short life and can be thrown away after some time.

Adjustment in culture:
The values of America are completely different with that of India. While entering in the USA, the reality of such differences is more obvious. You may also face the problem where the culture there may shock you at first but you will be adjusted once you spend time with the person which is the matter of time and patience.

However, with above said core values your decision of studying in USA will open many new opportunities to learn in completely a new culture. You will also have a chance to educate the American about your culture and traditions of your own country.
